Moodle (an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an Open Source Course Management System (CMS), also known as Learning Management System (LMS) or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), or an open source web platform designed to help teachers and educators to create and manage online courses.
Moodle is the standard for e-learning application
The stated philosophy of Moodle includes an educational and social constructionist approach, emphasizing the fact that students (not just teachers) can contribute educational experience in many ways. The features of Moodle reflect this in various design aspects, such as making it possible for students to comment on the contents (or contribute entries) or work collaboratively in a wiki.
Having said this, Moodle is flexible enough to allow a full range of instruction. Can be used for both introductory and advanced delivery of content (eg HTML pages) or courses and is not bound to a constructivist teaching approach.
Its free license and its modular design allows the community to continually develop additional functionality.
Features
The basic features of Moodle, ranging from the creation and organization of courses and lectures on-line communication tools, are the following:
- Forum
- Content Management
- Quiz
- Blogs
- Wiki
- Chat
- Glossaries
Moodle is designed in a modular way and so it is possible for example to support multiple languages, the installation of graphic themes other than the default, or even the creation of new capabilities not provided by the base distribution.
In addition to its compatibility with the SCORM 2004 enables the insertion of a "course" Moodle Learning Object written in this format, which can be produced togheter with other authors.
